Maple arrived at his foster home after a stressful stay in a shelter.
Throughout his time in care, he has been very slowly gaining confidence. His foster can entice him to play with wand toys from the safety of his cat bed. He now roams a few rooms in the house and spends much of his time under the couch in the sitting room, where people often gather. He will occasionally emerge while they are around to eat or for a change of scenery. He is still quite cautious of people but has begun to recognize that his foster caregivers are not a threat.
As his comfort level has grown, Maple has started to accept pets. He seems to enjoy being petted on all parts of his body, with a particular love for scratches at the base of his tail and around his hips. He will even flop over and allow belly rubs.
From the beginning, he has used the litter box reliably and has been eating and drinking well. He enjoys a variety of flavours and textures of wet food. He was initially interested in Temptations treats but has since lost interest, so experimenting with different treat options may be worthwhile.
Maple enjoys observing his foster family, always on his own terms. He is a beautiful and intelligent cat who will thrive in a patient and respectful home. He will need to move at a very slow pace in any new environment, and his adopter should be prepared for a long acclimation and trust-building period. His steady progress in foster care shows that, with time and understanding, Maple’s journey is absolutely worth it.
